Thought for the week
From 1th May 2001
Yep, I’m back from my Hol’s and now waiting to go into hospital.
Bank holidays are queuing up to take advantage of the sunshine after all the damp weather we’ve had recently, so there must be an election in the air.
One of the things I noticed most about the current government was just how many consultative documents were published in 1997 shortly after they came into power. It was just as though they really weren’t ready. The past 4 years have proved that things are still being discussed and promises being made even as I write.
Being slightly cynical I have come to the following conclusions on the three main political parties.
The Conservatives tend to do things even if not the right decisions or for the right reasons.
The Labour Party has lots of ideas, but really want to be liked, so actually do as little as possible and hope you won’t notice the lack of action.
The Liberal Democrats would like to do things, but spend a lot of time discussing all the nuts and bolts that exactly why they are doing it eludes them.
What do you think?
Next week - just why, after criticising the ‘huge increase’ in town council finances built up by the forward thinking Independents, haven’t the current temporary Councillors seen fit to use it for the benefit of the town?
Watch this space!

Oh dear, poor Lindy has decided to push for the ‘Town Square’ proposal again.
Just in case you forgot, this was an idea first floated by the Conservatives way back in the ‘60s and involved a Town Square where Woolworths/Sketchlys/Smiths is now and extending into Water Lane.
Unfortunately, the Town Council doesn’t own the land and some swine built a car park and shops on the site.
She picked up on this idea when she was an independent councillor but we couldn’t see how it could be achieved now so the obvious happened.
Never mind, her new Lib-Dem colleagues must think she has something to win votes even if it hasn’t a hope of getting past the ‘dream’ stage.
I know, they must be thinking of using the £150,000 ‘war chest’ that the last Council was building up for community projects. On the other hand, even they cannot be that stupid - can they?
You remember Lindy, don’t you?
Well known as the Independent Town Councillor who thought the answer to the countries waste disposal problem was for everyone to be give waste disposal units for their kitchen sink; canvassed for the Labour party during the general election in 1997 and joined the Lib-Dems just in time for the 1999 local elections and get re-elected as part of another ‘revival’ and suddenly became Mayor!
Talk about getting what you deserve!
Get out there on June 7th and vote for the best person, not party, so at least you have a clear conscience and you cannot blame yourself if the ‘wrong’ person is elected.
From 3rd May 2001
Gosh, it’s only 2 weeks gone and I have already switched off.
Just remember, they all will promise almost exactly what we all want and know is right. It just depends whether you think any of them will actually deliver.
Well, to be honest, for some reason I just know that whoever gets elected, in a couple of years, the government will find some excuse why their promises just couldn’t quiet be met, but never mind, elect us again and we’ll have another go.
All the parties seem to think that throwing money at a ‘problem’ will solve it. If it’s not the police, it’s asylum seekers, or NHS or something else.
We all have a story to tell, so I will tell you mine.
I went to the doctor with a minor problem (appointment within 24 hours!). They tried this and that solution over the next year without success when it was ‘ you need to see a specialist!‘).
This appointment took a few months and we once again tried similar solutions for the next year (we are now over two years on). As the problem was still with me, it was ‘we had better operate!‘ time.
Some 8 months later, a date was set - only to be put off a week (I expect the surgeon was on his holidays). I could not have had better treatment if I had been in a private hospital - honest. On discharge, it was decided that a follow up appointment ought to be made to ensure the treatment had worked. But it was lunch time, so an appointment would be sent. It arrived this week, for the end of June.
The point, in case you missed it, is that just why is it when you are about to be discharged that an appointment has to be made to see the consultant again. Did it come as a surprise? There is bound to be a logical reason, but is it effective? It does not need money throwing, it needs a deep down review of fundamental procedures.
I suspect that the law and order matter and all the other ‘concerns’ need the will to change rather than tinker, but that will take time and politicians only have a short time to make their mark.
Will we never learn?

From week week ending 31st May 2001
If Europe is such a good place, why do so many chose Britain rather than France, Germany, Holland etc. to apply for asylum?
It really must be terrible to live in mainland Europe and this is the society that some politicians would have us join wholeheartedly with.
The cat is out of the bag this week, with the Prime minister indicating that one way or the other, we will join the Euro, which means we will take orders from Europe and lose our identity in a similar way to Texas, California and Washington in the US. The big difference so far is that we do not all speak German or French - YET!!
Ted Heath asked us to agree to be part of an European trading area. I for one, will not make the same mistake I made last time, believe me.
Will we never learn?
