Weekly column for mid January 2006
It’s been a fraught couple of weeks as my mum went to the doctor’s as she wasn’t feeling too well.
He told her to go straight down to A&E at Hemel and ended up in Windsor wing, having blood taken for testing, blood transfusions to replace that which was taken out, wait for it to settle, then the cycle repeated.
After a week, suddenly they decided that she should be transferred to the local specialist renal unit at Stevenage. Imagine my poor old stepfather getting home from visiting and getting a telephone call to get back to West Herts (OK, old habits and all that) quick so he can follow the ambulance.
The current situation is that her kidneys have just about packed up and once stabilised, then regular dialyse should sort her out.
It’s early days, but remember this has been going on for nearly a year and they are nearly 80.
This raises a number of questions about our local heath service.
Why wasn’t the problem caught earlier?
If West Herts Hospital A& E only accepts planned accidents and emergencies, then what?
Stevenage is the ‘local’ facility - local, it’s over 30 miles from here!
Stevenage is a different world - not surprising given the uncertainty of West Herts future.
Just to reinforce the point, the journey back last night with my step-fathers driving was yet another challenge to my nerves. Perhaps the CE of our local trust would like to experience it?

I'm sure there is some mistake, but if the Herts and Beds Health bunch have only a deficit of £100m and the whole country has a deficit of £400m, why do they say that the Watford and Hatfield Hospitals may not get built as quickly as they first thought?
I mean, what's £100m between friends. According to Bambi, so much money is being put into the NHS, that everything is perfect and if the land still hasn't been secured for Hatfield, I know where land is (and always has been) available for the Hemel Hempsted General and Accident unit to be built.
Oh, I forgot, the Hospital sold it off as it wasn't needed - They really do live in a different world, don't they?
I posted the above on the Berkhamsted Conservatives Forum in case you are interested.

Political parties wonder why they are not trusted.
This month has seen the Lib-Dems digging deeper and deeper holes by the simple act of denying the truth.
First it was the Lib-Dem leader, then one of the candidates and finally this week a second candidate of the leadership suddenly changes his tune and tells the truth. The problem with this man is that he was elected to parliament using the same lie.
Mr Twitchell is not my cup of tea, but he was robbed and the electorate fooled when Simon Hughes was elected.
When I was a member of our local Council, I always took the view that once you put your head above the parapet, then you will get shot at. My life is very much an open book (just look at this site!) and it has to be more so the higher in politics you go.
Just to bring you up to date with mum - she’s out of hospital, complete with bags of pills and feeling much better.
