Column for July 2008
Well, there is good news and there is bad news.
The good news is that Dacorum will be getting a new hospital - I’ve been to the meeting, I’ve seen the artists’ impression and remembering that we are having 12000+ dwellings imposed on the area over the next few years (let’s say 18000 people!) and the new Hemel Hempstead General Hospital is intended to bring together all health services onto one site - it’s not impressive!
OK, they have yet to find a site, they have yet to decided what will comprise ‘all health services together’ will actually include and they haven’t even decided on a name.
The presentation/forum was entitled Hemel Hempstead General Hospital, but the Hatfield equal unit is to be called the Hatfield Heath Campus. That gives you an idea of just how different the aspirations of the PCT and residents will compare with reality.
We have requested that the new ‘complex’ is accessible, near to existing facilities and expandable, so that should narrow the choices down a bit so watch this space!!
Bad news - well, it looks like most of the population will be expected to submit to a criminal record check as there are not many people who don’t have something to do with children. I feel this is the alternative to introducing the ID card which is seriously over budget, under achieving and generally not liked. So between CCTV on every corner, vehicle identity systems everywhere and the criminal record check, should just about cover our personal liberties doubts.
I mean, between losing our data in the post, recording all email and telephone traffic (just in case!), the London oyster card system failing (state of the art!) and not even being about to mark a few exam papers, we really have nothing to fear!
Oh, I forgot, some may have heard that I lost either my telephone or broadband service for a month through some error. It gets better, I found out today that BT cancelled the service in January without telling me (or anyone else) and all sorts of excuses are being used in an attempt to explain it. However, the saga continues and I will find out what actually happened and why.
The must be a reason why my telephone number was just cancelled and the wiring disconnected in the exchange. I do know that I didn’t do it!
